Dining under the stars, how do you provision for Monhegan?
What do you like to eat when you head out for a long sail? We asked the members of the Monhegan Island RC for their favorites, and we want to hear from you. Comment on this blog with your ideas on how to provision for Monhegan.
Gregg (Breakaway) - I am a fan of many smaller meals. I like a cheese & cracker plate with veggies/fruit to nibble on in the afternoon. GORP is a favorite for midnight munchies (though often we end up finding squashed raisins around the cockpit the next morning) and oatmeal is a great warm up meal in the morning. I don’t cook onboard other than to boil water, so dinner is usually a couple of grab & go’s from the deli.
Molly (Kaos) - I have made food for several Monhegans. Ideally, I like provisioning for a boat with a stove/oven. If that is the case, we would often have some sort of casserole or lasagna for dinner. A variety of oven apps like pizza bites, taquitos, spanakopita, for second dinner (Just like the Hobbits). Something warm and easy to handle is awesome for 2 am in the morning. We also would have hot cocoa with Dave Mason's homemade Marshmallows. For breakfast we would have quiche or some kind of egg casserole.
I would say the key to great Monhegan provisioning is hot food and lots of easy and fun snacks!
John (Wild Blue) Our go to favorites are homemade frozen lasagnas or quiches, both serve as ice until cooked. There is nothing like a piping hot meal just before dark, the smell of a lasagna with garlic bread wafting up from down below is enough to make the whole crew salivate. Quiches are great too because they can be either dinner or breakfast. Already looking forward to this year’s trip around the bay.
Geoff (Tamarack) - Hard boiled eggs, pre-cooked bacon, shepherd's pie casserole.
Jay - We always enjoyed a beer and brownies at dawn. A few carbs and lots of sugar always helped at that hour. We referred to it as the breakfast of champions.
