Great News - An Update To The Monhegan

There have been a lot of changes to the Monhegan Island Race over the last few years. All the changes have given the race a better experience for the teams, and we have received tremendous agreement.

Past Changes

1. Adding Yellow Brick tracking to all boats for better data and visibility of the race to spectators, friends, and family that stayed onshore

2. Reducing the courses to just two races; Monhegan (Long 141 NM) and Seguin (Short 50 NM)

3. Lengthening the Monhegan Island Course from approximately 100 NM to 141 NM

4. Changing the start and finish locations (only by a couple of miles)

5. Committing to keeping the course lengths and locations the same for many years to come to enable race records to be more accurate and followed

6. Adding an ORC division to the Monhegan Course

7. Allowing boats to drop out of the Monhegan after the start and join the Seguin that starts the next day

This year we are adding an important change. The race committee has decided to change the rating requirements for the Monhegan Island Race to PHRF-NE 150 Racing Rating and 90 Cruising Rating. This change will allow “slower” boats to participate in the longer Monhegan Island Race Course. The previous rating cut-off was 90 racing and cruising. After doing many calculations, it is the opinion of the committee given average conditions that boat that rate 150 or faster should be able to complete the course by the time limit of 1700 on Sunday evening. We still expect most boats to finish before 1100 on Sunday morning but want as many boats as possible to race the course they want.

This change was requested by numerous sailors, and we listened! Our changes are having positive effects with increased entries each year.
